A uniquely rare once in a lifetime opportunity for the serious Titanic collector or museum with solid provenance. The world may never know why this trunk was not selected for the trip on Titanic but it stands as a lasting tangible testimony to the tragic loss.
This special artifact is from the residential mansion of John Jacob Astor IV, by some sources the richest man in the world at the time of his death on Titanic in 1912. The Astor Mansion was located at 840 5th Ave, New York and was awarded to his first wife after their divorce.
This 100+ year old designer trunk is clearly marked JJA on both sides in red paint. It was passed down through the family ending with his eldest grandson Prince Ivan Obolensky. The trunk and with grandsons contents (not included) were long forgotten about and abandoned by the family.
Measuring about 47” long, 22.5” wide and high and 22” high, this heavy wood lined trunk #100257 was manufactured by Bigot Company, 25 Rue Duphot, Paris. Its character shows significant wear with several damaged areas, scrapes and soiling throughout.
This is a new discovery that by some miracle escaped notice through history and is now being offered to the public for the first time. The documentation and LOA will be custom made for this relic and include miscellaneous paperwork found inside linking family ownership. Serious inquiries only can message with questions. Special shipping or pick-up will need to be arranged.
