Prior to the maiden voyage in April 1912, Titanic's finishing touches were made in Belfast, Ireland. A traveling merchant seaman went onboard and visited the then famous ship in the final fitting-out stage and decided to take a piece of scrap fabric as a souvenir. Did he have permission? We don’t know but somehow doubt it. He gave this sizable piece of green baize to his sister, who later passed it down to her daughter-in-law. It stayed with the same family until 1998. The green baize (felt) in this display is a piece of that original souvenir scrap fabric.
This rare Titanic artifact is a true treasure and museum item. It measures approximately 2” x 3” and comes with a signed Certificate of Authenticity and amazing support documents. Baize was primarily used on Titanic gaming tables but was also used on some swing doors and officer tables.
There is more than one in the collection so the relic shown may not be the exact one you will receive. Each may slightly differ in size, shade or condition. This fabric is over 100 years old with a long historic journey, some pieces may have small stains, uneven cuts or other defects. These only add to its character.
The acrylic screw-down holder and stand shown are not included. For ease of shipping it will be sent in a flat rigid plastic holder used for protecting collectible cards.
This fabric is well-known in the Titanic hobby; it has been seen by countless enthusiasts while on public display at the 2017 Ronald Reagan Presidential Library’s Titanic Exhibit in Simi Valley, CA and at the National Geographic Titanic Museum Exhibit in Washington DC. It was personally viewed and admired by James Cameron and Dr. Robert Ballard. Larger pieces are currently on an international tour at Exhibition Hub’s “Titanic an Immersive Voyage” exhibits.
